LONG-TIME PATRONS THOMAS AND DENISE CHAMPION WEST TEXAS SYMPHONY'S CULTURAL LEGACY

MIDLAND, TX — Thomas and Denise have long been stalwart supporters of the West Texas Symphony, driven by a passion for music and community. Their involvement, sparked by serendipitous moments and deep personal connections, has significantly impacted the local arts organization.

Denise recalls her initial introduction to the symphony: “I was already frequently going with friends. They had season tickets, and I was often the third wheel. But it was through those outings that I became captivated by the music.”

Thomas' journey began differently. “My younger daughter brought me a slip of paper one day and said, ‘If you want to be in the Midland Symphony Guild, sign this form and bring it to a meeting.’ As a single dad, I wanted to support her interests, so I went. My involvement continued and I became the guild president, which got me a seat on the board of the West Texas Symphony as well.”

Their paths intersected at a gala hosted by the West Texas Symphony. “I remember attending the gala thinking I wouldn’t stay long I wanted to meet with some individuals and then leave before the live auction. However, that changed when we were introduced. I remember buying two things at the live auction because I wanted to show off,” Thomas added.

The chance meeting resulted in their marriage and a shared passion. “My first symphony concert was mesmerizing,” Thomas said. “It was a masterworks concert, and I remember feeling that this music was something I needed, even though I didn't realize it before.”

Denise emphasizes the cultural significance of the symphony. “In the middle of West Texas, we need this piece of culture. It's vital for our community and for future generations. We need to keep it alive.”

SUPPORT THE WEST TEXAS SYMPHONY

Thomas adds, “The symphony not only enriches us culturally but also has a tangible impact on our community. It provides professional opportunities for musicians, which in turn enhances the local educational landscape. These professionals might not stay here if it weren't for the symphony.”

One concert they eagerly anticipated was the return of Barbara Padilla. “She was fantastic in 2021,” Denise said. “We're excited about her visit again.”

Their efforts have not gone unnoticed. The couple's financial support, outreach and personal invitations have inspired others to engage with the symphony. “We've bought extra season tickets and invited friends, many of whom have now become regular attendees and supporters themselves,” Thomas shared.
